Anne Angela Agostino of Yonkers, NY went to go be with the Lord on November 5, 2021 in The Bronx, NY, at the age of 99 (2 months from her 100 th Birthday). A distinguished World War II veteran, Anne served courageously after enlisting in the U.S. Army as a Nurse, where she ultimately met her beloved husband, Vincent Agostino.
Anne was born January 16, 1922 in Manhattan, NY. She was raised in The Bronx by her parents Frank & Josephine Granese, where she was the youngest of 7. Her siblings were named Jenny, Frank, Ralph, Millie, George & Joe. A phenomenal distance swimmer in High School & afterward, she was expected to swim the English Channel, but had to abandon that plan after the war began.
After high school, Anne enrolled in Metropolitan School of Nursing to become a RN. Following that, she enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps where she served as both a General Nurse & Surgical Nurse, and received numerous accolades including a Battle Star, American Theater Ribbon, WWII Victory Medal and German Occupation Ribbon. It was there she also subsequently achieved the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Prior to this, her brother Frank – who served in the Army Air Corps as a Turret Gunner – was shot down in the North Sea where he was initially considered MIA. This particular event contributed to Anne’s brave & steadfast decision to enlist (as well as all her siblings who also served in various roles in the Army, Navy & Coast Guard). Unfortunately, she later discovered her brother Frank was later declared KIA, despite his crew surviving via life raft. After returning home from the war +1 German Shephard puppy which she secured and snuck on board from overseas, Anne married Vincent Agostino where they settled in Yonkers to raise their 3 beloved children.
She is survived by her daughter Mary Ann (Frank) Magaletta and her son Jim (Anne) Agostino. She is also survived by her 12 grandchildren Tina, Billy, Tracy, Amy, Frankie, Tricia, Michael, Toni, Christa, Joseph, Jimmy, Thomas and 22 great grandchildren. Anne is pre-deceased by her husband Vincent, her daughter Jo Ellen (William) Nugent, and the rest of her immediate family previously mentioned.
“Nanny” was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, friend and child of God. She worked part-time for a foster child program as a visiting nurse and served graciously along with her husband for their primary church, Our Lady of Fatima. As a committed Catholic, she regularly attended services and frequently prayed the Rosary. She would give great advice to her loved ones and enjoyed cooking delicious meals, especially her mother’s sacred recipes like lasagna & meatballs (recipes which were only ever communicated verbally, never written). Her & her husband (Poppy) were also incredibly generous with their personal time & resources, inviting their entire extended family to utilize their summer house in LBI, NJ. She also was very fond of Frank Sinatra, Nathan’s Frankfurters and the TV show “Blue Bloods.”
