Cecelia Veronica Carby
(July 14, 1946- November 20, 2024)
Ceceilia Veronica Carby passed away peacefully at home on November 20, 2024. Cecelia, a beacon of
compassion and resilience, was born on July 14, 1946, in the vibrant city of Kingston, Jamaica. She spent her
early years in Balcarres, Portland, attending the Avocat Primary School. From an early age, she exhibited a
passion for service and science, attending the Buff Bay Private Baptist High School and the Domestic School
of Science in Port Antonio, before embarking to the United Kingdom in 1964 to pursue her dream of nursing.
In the United Kingdom, Cecelia attended The North Staffordshire School of Nursing and earned her State
Registered Nursing Degree in 1973. Cecelia was a lifelong learner, known for her curiosity, strong-willed
nature, and sense of humor and further went on to The North Staffordshire School of Midwifery receiving a
Certificate in Midwifery in 1976. Feeling undaunted, she moved ahead to complete a Certificate in Public
Health Nursing from the University of Keele in 1978.
Seeking better opportunities for her children and the need to be closer to her beloved Jamaica and aging
mother, Ceceilia immigrated to the United States in 1980, at great professional sacrifice. I read that. “It is a
testament to the power of individuals to prioritize values and principles above personal comfort and desires.”
That was mom, always putting her children first, balancing how she could better nurture their development.
Having worked as a Midwife and Public Health Nurse in the United Kingdom, she settled into her second home
(in the United States), at Bronx Lebanon Hospital, as a member of the Nursing Team for over 30 years. During
this time, Cecelia earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Community Health from St. Joseph's College in
1994, and a Master of Science Degree in Health Policy & Management from New York Medical College in
2011.
Beyond her professional and academic achievements, Cecelia was a devoted mother, sister, and friend, whose
warmth and generosity touched the lives of all who crossed her path. Whether it was attending church,
supporting charitable causes, or lending a listening ear to those in need, she embodied the spirit of
selflessness and empathy. My mother was a woman of deep faith She embarked on her journey of faith from a
tender age, cultivating a relationship with God that would become the cornerstone of her life. She found a
home in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church; it was the essence of her being. Throughout her life, she held onto
her faith, always turning to prayer and scripture in times of joy and sorrow.
Cecelia’s legacy of caring and compassion will continue to inspire us to be agents of positive change. As we
gather to honor Ceceilia’s life and legacy, let us celebrate the profound impact she made on our lives and the
countless memories that will forever be etched in our hearts.
