Mr. Charles Pavia of Thornwood passed away on Tuesday, June 25, 2024 in his 73rd year.
Charles Pavia was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1950 to Paul and Mary Pavia. He was raised in Brooklyn for 8 years and then Ridgewood, NJ with his older brother, Anthony Pavia, and younger sister, Linda Pavia. He attended Bergen Catholic High School.
Charles received his B.S. from Fordham University in Biology, and his Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill. Following his graduate work, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine, followed by a research associate position at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, where he was a recipient of a National Research Council Resident Research Associateship Award.
Charles was married to Jane Pavia for over 48 years, and they raised two children: Paul and Vanessa Pavia. Charles was the grandfather of two grandchildren: Beckett and Annabelle Pavia.
Charles was an Associate Professor at New York Medical College for one year and then a professor of biomedical sciences at New York Institute of Technology for over 30 years. Throughout his career, he focused his research on various pathogenic microbes with a particular emphasis on the disease-causing spirochetes and certain protozoan pathogens. His research has covered multiple areas including the basic microbiologic, immunologic, molecular, diagnostic and clinical aspects of Lyme disease, malaria, toxoplasmosis, and Q fever.
He was a member of the American Society for Microbiology and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. He served as a grant reviewer for the NIH and other organizations.

Family and friends are invited to Pleasant Manor Funeral Home, Inc. 575 Columbus Avenue - Thornwood, New York 10594 on Sunday, June 30, 2024 from 1:00 - 3:00 PM for visitation. Religious services will be held at 2:30 PM on Sunday, June 30, 2024, officiated by Charles' dear friend Deacon Jerry.
