Albert B. Lowenfels
May 10, 1927-March 25, 2026
Albert Brownold Lowenfels, born in 1927, lived a life of almost unimaginable changes. As a child in the 1930s in White Plains, NY, he rode a pony to school. Later as an adult, he gave a virtual lecture on the uses of Artificial Intelligence in surgical diagnoses. He also became a fan of online shopping. Albert’s embrace of technology was supported by his tech-savvy wife of 77 years, Doris Lowenfels, who was a crucial part of the extensive research necessary for the hundreds of articles and the three books he authored, which are still available on Thriftbooks.com. Albert led a life well-lived and well-documented, as evidenced by his countless journals listing: books he read, when he planted what, jars of jelly, bottles of wine, bags of broccoli, first frost dates, and whether the gloves he found were right or left-handed. Albert was an avid hiker, skier, gardener, chef, musician, and carpenter. His professional career brought him to Tunisia, Qatar, Japan, Italy, France, Sweden, and Germany. His leisure travel included hikes in England, France, the Great Tetons, and the Himalayas. In these world-wide travels, Albert was always accompanied by his usually reliable compass, as well as his thread-bare handkerchief, which was washed every day and dried while spread on a mirror at night. Until almost the very end of his life, Albert planted 100 daffodils a year and enthusiastically watched the Rockford Files. He always said “sure” whenever offered waffles or ice-cream.
A graduate of White Plains High School, he then studied at the University of Vermont, followed by the U.S. Navy Radio Technician's School and finally at the New York University College of Medicine. He practiced surgery for many years and later transitioned to teaching and epidemiological research. Throughout his career, Albert was known for being a skillful surgeon, an excellent teacher, author, and researcher. Above all, he was known for skiing to work during a blizzard! Albert and Doris were married for 77 years. Together they raised four children: Kate Blanas (Jim), Charles Lowenfels (Sheila), Bob Lowenfels, and Ann Lowenfels (Steve Redler). Later, they were blessed with five grandchildren (Nina, Demetri, Joseph, Lincoln, Doris) and seven great-grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held for Albert and Doris Lowenfels on September 26 at the New Castle Community Center in Chappaqua, N.Y. at 1:00 p.m.
