John A. McDermott

John A. McDermott of Valhalla, New York passed away in Greenwich on Wednesday, August 12, 2020 in his 83rd year.  

 He was the youngest of eight born in Four Mile House, Co. Roscommon, Ireland in 1936. When he was 21 he moved to the United States, and served in the United States Navy.  He married Maura McDermott (nee O'Flaherty) in 1965 and lived with his family in St. Brendan’s Parish, Bronx, before moving to Valhalla in 1996. He graduated with a degree in accounting from Lehman College in 1981 and worked for the NYS Department of Taxation and Finance until his retirement in 2001. In his free time he taught Irish language classes for the New York Gaelic League, once being honored as their Grand Marshall for the St. Patrick’s Day parade in Manhattan. He had an active role in the Roscommon Society of New York, as well as the Bedford Park Shamrock Club, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars(VFW) in Valhalla. 

John is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Maura, his son, Vincent McDermott, daughters and their spouses, Deirdre and Raymond Gibbons, Kathleen and Thomas Mannion. In addition to his grandchildren, Caitlin & Liam Gibbons and Maisey Mannion, his sister, Sr. Leonie in England and numerous nieces and nephews from New York, England, Ireland and the Isle of Mann.

Family and friends are invited to Pleasant Manor Funeral Home, Inc. 575 Columbus Avenue Thornwood, New York 10594 on Sunday, August 16, 2020 from 2:00 - 7:00 PM to celebrate John's life.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for John at Holy Name of Jesus Church in Valhalla on Monday, August 17, 2020 at 10:00 AM.  John will be laid to rest after his funeral mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, New York.  To commemorate John's service to his country, the United States Navy Honor Guard will be present to provide military honors.
