John Moran Obituary

John T. Moran, Forest Hills, NY, formerly of the Bronx, New York, 81, passed away peacefully, on Friday, January 23, 2026.

John “Jackie” Moran was born in Manhattan, New York on February 8, 1944 to Marie (nee McGirl) and John Moran. He was the first born child who was later joined by Mary Ann a year plus later (Irish twins) and the two would continue to share an unshakeable bond as the two oldest Moran children. Years later, 2 more siblings would complete the quartet with the addition of Eileen and Thomas. The four Moran children enjoyed many a cream soda, baked potato, and adventures with their dear friends and Moran, McGirl, Hunt, and Vahey cousins throughout the four quadrants of Parkchester.

Jackie attended St. Helena's Elementary school, Regis High School, and Fordham Law school.

He worked as a Spanish teacher in Glen Cove, NY while working towards his JD. He worked for years at the NYC Department of Corrections, putting to use his amazing intellect and attorney expertise until his retirement. He continued to serve others, always happy to offer advice or share in a cultural experience.
Many a Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve were spent in New Jersey. These were all treasured times spent in the loving company of Patty, Thomas, Carolyn, John Moran, Tom and Franceen Vahey, Erin, Chip, Kaitlin and Ryan McGill, and Tommy and Claudia Vahey. Christmas and New Year’s Day in the Bronx and later Valhalla, NY with his sisters and nieces and nephews. Yes, at times, he was told the arrival time was an hour earlier yet he still managed to arrive on his own time, always with a black bag full of newspapers. He enjoyed a glass of red wine with ice and imparting his knowledge and love of music and the arts with his adoring family. He would often be seen with a newspaper (New York Times) at family gatherings like weddings or holiday gatherings. He delighted in his family and spending time with his siblings even if they didn’t always see eye to eye. Many an argument over late arrivals and a baked potato were witnessed, but through it all the Moran siblings lived fiercely. The common factor being their beloved mother Marie.

Throughout his life he shared so many stories of adventures with friends and so many days were spent reminiscing about his childhood. He found love with Kim for 11 years and reflected happily about their time together. He could always be seen reading the NY Times and sharing his love for education and the arts. He lived to go for walks and while in later years he may have gotten lost, he would always smile and be so enthusiastic about living his life to the fullest. Jackie (Uncle John, Uncle Johnny) was intelligent, intellectual, and the most laid back of the Moran children. He often glided through life at his own pace and often arrived late, but he was always thrilled to share his love of knowledge and the arts with his loved ones.

Growing up his nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews were fortunate to have him to bring them to experiences like shows at Lincoln Center in the snow, Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, or adventures at museums or lunch at a local diner. His brilliance and love of life was evident in all that he did. Jackie imparted a common love for the arts among his nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. He loved to gift books and experiences and those who were lucky to be in his presence will forever be grateful.

Jackie was also an avid traveler and saw many places around the world and in the United States. Some places he traveled to included Spain, London, Italy, Israel, Malta, and Tunisia. He also frequented the Chautauqua Institution in upstate NY. He loved trains and would travel this way as much as possible. Jackie was fortunate to experience the train trip from Denver, CO to Salt Lake City, UT, which is supposed to be one of the most beautiful train trips in the United States. He particularly loved visiting Gothic cathedrals and loved architecture. You could always count on receiving a post card from Jackie during all of his travels; it was always such a delight to receive these in the mail.

Jackie was very active politically and supported human rights and environmental causes. He was a strong supporter and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and made positive changes for so many through his activism. He wrote many a letter to the editor to the NY Times and would send them in the mail to his family.
John Moran is predeceased by his parents John and Marie, siblings Thomas, Eileen, and Mary Ann, beloved cats Linda and Toby.
John Moran is survived by his loving sister-in-law Patricia (née White), four nieces: Christina and spouse Seth Riseman, Katherine and spouse Jim Hunter, Jennifer and spouse Joe Bello, Carolyn and spouse Anthony Richards, and nephew John Moran and spouse Katie (née Sheehy).
