Louise Margaret Ludlum (nee Billowits) of Ossining, NY passed away on March 29 at the age of 88. She is survived by her loving husband of 67 years, Walter H. Ludlum, and their 5 children: John (Lisa) Ludlum, Chris (Beth) Ludlum, Valerie (Ted) Livingston, Andrew Ludlum, and Elizabeth (Frank) Medici. She was a doting grandmother to her grandchildren, Jack, Danny and Bill Ludlum, Michael, Matthew and Nikolas Ludlum, Christopher (Stessie), Catherine and Andrew Livingston, Annatje and Maggie Ludlum, and Frank, Julia (Matt) and Claire Medici. She was also blessed with one great-grandchild, Jake Livingston. She is survived by her sister Margaret Martin of San Antonio, TX.
Louise was born and raised in the Bronx. At the age of 15 her family moved to Yonkers. During the summers, she would travel to Lancaster, PA and stay with her formidable maternal grandmother. In these impressionable years, Louise learned tremendous gardening skills and a survivor mindset from her granny. As a child, she resolved that her own home would have flowers in every room, a resolution she achieved in every year and every home. She attended Roosevelt High School, where an athletic young man named Walter Ludlum caught her eye. Upon graduation she worked for AT&T, and when she and Walter married in 1959, she worked until the birth of her first child. Four more children followed in short order making her a very busy young mother.
With her typical determination, she decided to get a college degree, a path that was not open to her as a young bride and mother. So, in her early 40’s she enrolled at Pace University. Receiving her bachelor’s was a source of great satisfaction to her and her proud family. An internship at Emil Yedowitz’s floral shop in Yonkers was instrumental in helping her create a home based career as a floral designer. She would often say she had the happiest job: making beautiful bridal bouquets. Later she achieved the title Master Gardener from the Cornell Cooperative Extension, which she put to use designing landscaping for friends and family.
Louise was a stellar wife, a doting mother and a big-hearted grandmother. She was caring and kind but also fiercely independent, a delicate balancing act for any parent. She raised her children to be equally independent. Her advice on the human condition was always shrewd. She taught herself how to knit, and before her hands became too arthritic, she knitted lovely baby blankets. Louise was born to be a granny and was blessed with 14 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
In the words of Alfred Austin: “The glory of gardening: hands in the dirt, head in the sun, heart with nature. To nurture a garden is to feed not just on the body, but the soul.” Gardening fed her soul, and her soul seeded the hearts of all around her.
