Mary E. (Holmes) McKenna

Mary Elizabeth McKenna, nee Holmes, passed away on January 4, 2023, surrounded by her family and loved ones after a long illness. Mary was born in the Bronx on August 19, 1939, to her late Irish parents, Lawrence (Co. Kilkenny) and Ann (Co. Clare) Holmes. Mary was a graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School, Bronx, NY. Mary found a career she really enjoyed in real estate. She excelled as a real estate broker, appraiser and co-owner of Murphy & McKenna Real Estate in Pleasantville, NY. Mary was the beloved wife of her late husband of 58 years, William "Bill" McKenna. They settled in Thornwood, NY where they raised their two daughters. Upon retiring Mary and her husband Bill spent most of their time enjoying the beach and boardwalk in Spring Lake, New Jersey. Mary also kept active with her many hobbies including quilting, sewing, gardening and decorating. She was an avid shopper and would never decline an invitation to one of her many favorite stores. Her family and friends have wonderful memories of enjoying an afternoon lunch with Mary, after one of these outings. She and her husband were also dog lovers, especially the Airedale breed. A dog was always a part of their family, Mary now leaves behind her much loved rescue dog, Charlie. Mary is survived by her daughters Kathleen Toner (Adrian) and Karalyn McKenna, and cherished granddaughter Nicola Toner. Mary is also survived by her brother William Holmes (Kathleen). Mary was a loving and devoted aunt of many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. Mary was a vibrant, kind, strong woman with a warm smile and quick wit. She was an amazing mother, grandmother and devoted friend to many. She will be sadly missed but forever in our hearts.

Mary will be laid to rest with her husband Bill at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, New York.

Family and friends are invited to Pleasant Manor Funeral Home, Inc. 575 Columbus Avenue Thornwood, New York 10594 on Sunday, January 8, 2023 from 3:00 - 7:00 PM for visitation.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Mary at Holy Innocent's Church in Pleasantville on Monday, January 9, 2023 at 10:00 AM.  Mary will be laid to rest in her family plot alongside her beloved husband William who predeceased her in 2018 at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne.
