Michael Cikoja Obituary

Michael A. Cikoja passed away on March 4th, 2024 at the age of 65.

He is predeceased by his father Anthony Cikoja. Michael is survived by his wife Nella, daughters Alexa and Devin, mother Millie, and sister Katherine Meladossi. Additionally, he is survived by:

Franco, Matthew and Daniel Meladossi:

Kristina Massari and Francesca Dale;

Marijan, Tea, Roko and Gloria Buselic;

Sanja, Ivo, Nela, and Nina Nemcic;

Michael, Emma, and Jaxon Cavaluzzi, Joze and Tonka Buselic

…as well as extended family in the US, Canada, Argentina, and Croatia.

Michael was born in Manhattan to Anthony and Millie Cikoja who emigrated in 1955 from Croatia and established a life for their family in the Bronx. The family eventually moved to Scarsdale in the summer of 1968 where Michael and his older sister Katherine attended Edgemont Schools. They spent many a childhood summer revisiting family in Croatia and keeping in touch with their heritage, something that was always important to Michael.

Michael graduated from Edgemont High school in 1977 and earned the yearbook superlative “Most Unappreciated by Teachers” – if that didn’t begin to explain his personality then nothing else could.

Michael’s connection to his heritage was how he met his wife Nella: first as children sharing marbles in the village streets of Makarska on the Dalmatian Coast and later through a chance encounter during their twenties. Nella moved to New York with Michael where they were married in March of 1984. Michael and Nella lived in Valhalla, NY with his mother and sister’s family and where they welcomed two daughters into the world: Alexa and Devin Cikoja.

Michael was a man of many trades. There wasn’t anything he couldn’t figure out how to do and eventually master. With extensive trade expertise, he became a self-employed contractor who took pride in building homes for his customers and providing them with the places of their dreams. He took his responsibility as a provider very seriously and taking care of his girls was always a priority.

Michael suffered an accident at work in 2004 which precipitated a lengthy decline in his health and a twenty year battle where he showed tireless fight and resilience.

Michael will be remembered as a force to be reckoned with. His presence was always overpowering no matter where he went. He loved cooking up a storm and hosting events with his friends and family and was often the life of the party.

He will be deeply and forever missed by all who knew him.
