Michael E. Helwig,79, of Hawthorne, New York, passed away surrounded by his loving family, on March 3 2020. Born August 19, 1940, in Yonkers, New York, the son of the late Mary(nee O'Neill) and Henry Helwig.
Michael attended elementary school at Our Lady of the Rosary, Warburton Ave, Yonkers NY where he also was an altar boy. He graduated from Gorton High School in 1958 where he was a star athlete. He married Patricia Quinn Helwig on August 3, 1963.He was an electrician employed by the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Local 3, NYC and worked on many iconic construction sites like the World Trade Center and Coop City. Michael was an active member of the Westchester Putnam chapter of the I.B.E.W. Retirees Association.
He is survived by his loving wife Patricia Quinn Helwig of Hawthorne, New York; his daughter and son-in-law, Patrice and Kevin Duane of Valhalla, NY.; daughter and son-in-law Catherine and Barry Robbins of Mamaroneck, NY.; daughter Colleen of Danbury, CT.; daughter Elisabeth of Providence, RI.; daughter and son-in-law, Lauren and Robert Albanese of Providence, RI.; grandchildren Brian and Brendan Duane of Valhalla, NY., and Liliana, Siena, and William Albanese of Providence, RI.; brother Gerald Helwig of New York, NY.;sister-in-law Maureen Lawlor of E. Brunswick, NJ.; brother-in-law Ronald Hicks of Carmel, NY.; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Michael was preceded in death by his sister, Muriel Hicks of Carmel, NY. and his sister-in-law Joan Galbraith and brother-in-law Ken Galbraith of Elmira, New York.
Family and friends are invited to Pleasant Manor Funeral Home, Inc. 575 Columbus Avenue Thornwood, New York 10594 on Friday, March 13, 2020 from 2:00 - 8:00 PM for visitation. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Michael at Holy Rosary Church in Hawthorne on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 11:30 AM. A private cremation will follow at Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, New York. Interment of his ashes will occur at a later date in Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, New York.
