Michael Morriss Obituary

On Saturday July 30, 2022, Michael J. Morriss, loving son, father of three children, and a US Navy veteran passed away at age 59 of a heart attack. Michael was born on January 30, 1963 in New York City to Judy and John Morriss. He was the brother of Julienne Morriss Callaway and John George Morriss. Michael graduated from Williams College and received a Masters of Philosophy from Christ Church, Oxford University. He worked on Wall Street for more than thirty years. Michael was the father to two daughters, Lilly and Grace, and one son, Michael. Michael loved his children very much and was fiercely proud of each of their unique accomplishments. Michael had a lifelong interest in history, politics, sports, and travel. Every event with him included a healthy debate about politics and global affairs. An avid sports fan, especially for the New York Giants, Knicks, Rangers, and Yankees, Michael enjoyed analyzing player trades, recalling statistics and team histories with an almost photographic memory, and talking about the next championship for a New York team. Michael graduated from Regis High School in New York City. At Regis, Michael developed his interest in history and politics. He played four years of basketball, captaining the team in his senior year, and was selected to the NYC All Star Team. Michael also edited the school literary magazine. At Williams College, he majored in history and economics, and studied at the London School of Economics. Michael’s study in London began his interest in travel, which saw him traveling widely in Europe and Asia, including a Cold War visit to Russia, and trips to India and Japan. Michael embraced his Irish heritage and often referenced the great inspiration and influence of his family and ancestors. His visits to the family farm in Kerry left a lasting impression on him. After college at Williams, Michael started a career in finance with breaks to teach English in Japan, study at Oxford, and spend three years in the US Navy. While he was an intelligence officer in the Navy, his tours included time at the Pentagon and deployment on a nuclear submarine with the Sixth Fleet in the Mediterranean theater. Michael’s career on Wall Street included roles at some of the leading financial institutions in the world, including Merrill Lynch, Morgan Stanley, Bank of America, and JP Morgan, in mergers and acquisition investment banking and high yield fixed income sales. Michael was preceded in death by his mother, Judy Morriss, and sister, Julienne Morriss Callaway. He is survived by his three children, Lilly, Grace, and Michael, his father, his brother, his aunts, Nancy Rush and Kathleen Brassil, his brother-in-law, Jack Callaway, several cousins, nieces, a nephew, as well as many dear friends.
