Nicholas George Proios

 Nicholas George Proios, (“Nick”), passed away on Saturday, August 31, 2019, at the young age of 24.  He is survived by his parents, brother, cousins, aunts and uncles, including a loving Godson.
Nick was born on December 3, 1994 at Einstein Hospital in The Bronx.  He briefly lived in Tenafly, NJ and Riverdale, NY.  In 1998 his family moved to Bronxville, NY where he attended elementary, middle and high school, graduating in 2013.  While in high school, Nick excelled in math and science. He subsequently attended the University of Minnesota, enrolling in the electrical engineering program.  During high school and college Nick would tutor students in mathematics. He enjoyed this and had thoughts of one day becoming a teacher. In college, he developed a love for playing poker and competed in several tournaments in Minnesota and Atlantic City, dreaming that one day he might play in The World Series of Poker. Nick was on leave from U of M this past year and had registered to begin his final year of studies this week.
As a youth, Nick enjoyed sailing. He took sailing classes in New Rochelle and received an ASA certification. He also enjoyed taking karate lessons and worked his way up to a brown belt. He enjoyed playing chess and competed and placed in many school chess tournaments. Nick also played tennis, baseball and football and attended many Yankees and Met games with his father and brother.
Nick’s great passion, however, was in the arts.  Nick played the piano, saxophone and guitar, taking lessons in each since elementary school and participating in many NYSSMA events over the years. He enjoyed entertaining his family with Elton John and Billy Joel piano pieces. 
Nick was in three high school productions; in his junior year he played the prominent role of the Major-General in Pirates of Penzance and in his senior year he played the lead role of Pseudolus in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.  Nick was a natural on the stage and his performances were a knock out.  He enjoyed making people laugh with his self-deprecating humor and was very good at it. He also had a talent for picking up a person’s nuances and imitating them dead on.
Nick was an active member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church Community.  He graduated from the Sunday School and Greek School, having passed the Greek Regents exam.  He was also a member of the Holy Trinity Scouting Program having begun as a Cub Scout, moving on up to the Boy Scouts and earning all of the ranks up through Eagle Scout.  He was a troop leader and an inspiration to the younger scouts. He participated in various community service projects run by the church and the troop, as well as other scouting events. This included Camp Sequassen and Camp St. Paul in CT and Ionian Village in Greece. Nick would also attend Holy Trinity troop meetings and church events while he was home from college.
Nick was fortunate to have enjoyed one of his great pleasures this past month and travel to Greece with his family. He enjoyed going to Greece during the summer, as well as spending Christmas and New Year breaks in Aruba with his parents and brother.
Nick was loved by his family and everyone in his high school, college and church communities, including family and friends in Greece who got to know him. He touched people not only with his humor, but also with his heart. He always wanted to make people laugh, smile and feel better.  Unfortunately, he was taken much too early and will be sorely missed.
 

Family and friends are invited to Pleasant Manor Funeral Home, Inc. 575 Columbus Avenue Thornwood, New York 10594 on Monday, September 9, 2019 from 2:00 - 9:00 PM for visitation.  Funeral services will be celebrated for Nicholas at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church 10 Mill Road New Rochelle, New York 10804 on Tuesday, September 10, 2019 at 10:30 AM.  Interment will follow at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla, New York.
