Peggy O'Sullivan Obituary

Peggy O’Sullivan (nee Marren) was born May 5, 1939 in Curracunane, Curry, Co Sligo, Ireland to Bartholomew and Catherine Marren.  She spent many memorable years on the family farm with her siblings Hugh, Sr. Mary, Teresa, John, Kathleen, Anne and Attracta.  It was a home full of love and warmth.  Peggy emigrated to America in 1959 following her sisters and seeking “the streets paved with gold”.  They were great friends as well as sisters.  They and other friends spent many fun years together on Vermilyea Ave in Manhattan.

Peggy was married in 1964 at Good Shepherd Church in upper Manhattan.  Her four children, Paul, Timothy, Carmel and Brenda followed over the next several years. They were the center of her life and the pride of her existence.  In 1972, she moved with her family to Mahopac, New York, where she lived for the rest of her life.  She spent many years as a faithful parishioner of St. John the Evangelist Church and sent her children to St John’s elementary school.  Their uniforms were always spotless with the shirts and pleats ironed to perfection.  Their homework was always done, and done well.  Her pride and joy were her kids.  They were sent out perfectly every day even if she had to stay up all night.

She always maintained close ties with her family in America and Ireland.  They were the center of many holidays and happy occasions.  She spent many a late night on the phone with her sisters Kathleen, Anne, Teresa and Attracta.  The children spent summers with their cousins in New York, Culver Lake andIreland.  She was a frequent visitor to Ireland to see her beloved parents and family.  She loved her nephews and nieces on both sides of the Atlantic as if they were her own children.  In turn, she was their revered Aunt Peggy, always full of fun and advice. Many a fun night was spent around a kitchen table as Peggy and her sisters reminisced about their youth and playfully debated with wicked barbs; and Peggy, the avowed Irish citizen, staunchly defending America.

Peggy watched her children grow and assisted them as they moved through high school and college and into careers.  She was thrilled as each of them married and she loved their spousesEileen(Paul), Mary(Timmy), Todd(Carmel) and Martin(Brenda). Her grandchildren, Paul, Liam, Joseph, Thomas, Aine, Timothy, Eamon and Killian were the focus of her life upon their arrival.  They loved their grandmother and visiting with her.  She never forgot a birthday and loved to cook for them.  Her Irish soda bread was appreciated by all and disappeared quickly over a cup of tea.  Her mashed potatoes were practically gourmet and she was told many times by her grandchildren how well she cooked, despite cooking being a labor of love for her.

Peggy passed into eternal life on July 26, 2025 surrounded by her loving family still reciting her prayers and poems in Gaelic.

Besides her children and grandchildren, she is survived by her brother-in-law, Sean, of Longford, Ireland, her sister-in-law,Bernadette of Florida and her lifelong friends Ann and Mike of South Carolina and numerous nieces and nephews and their spouses and children

She was loved as Mom and Aunt Peggy and will be dearly missed.

As a faithful servant of Jesus Christ, “Ar dheis De go raibh an anam” (Gaelic for “May her soul be at God’s right hand.”)
