Sylvester J. Teclaw Jr. of Valhalla New York passed away on Sunday, October 8, 2023, not long after his 93rd birthday.
He was born on September 3, 1930, to Sylvester Teclaw and Anna Pfister and was raised in White Plains, New York.
Sylvester graduated from Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York with a bachelor’s degree in business administration. Shortly after graduation, he married his college sweetheart, Dorothy LaPoint and they moved back to White Plains. He then entered the United States Army and spent 16 months in Korea with the 24th Infantry Division.
Upon his honorable discharge in the service, Syl and Dottie moved to Valhalla to begin their life together. Syl founded, owned, and operated Teclaw Fuel and Heating Inc, servicing the local community for approximately 25 years. During this time, he joined the Valhalla Fire Department No. 1 and held many titles as Officer, Chief Mechanic, Fire Chief, Fire Commissioner and Treasurer. He was also a member of the Elks Club and was in a local bowling league. Here is where he and Dottie met their lifelong friends.
In their 71 years of marriage, Syl and Dottie raised two loving and devoted daughters, Suzanne Cosentino (Dominic) and Ellen Bosan (Brian). They have been blessed with four beautiful grandchildren: Jason and Thomas Cosentino and Robert and Elizabeth Bosan.
Syl has been very active in his hometown community of Mt. Pleasant where he was a Republican District Leader, and Vice Chairman of the Mt. Pleasant Republican Committee and also a Commander of the American Legion in Valhalla. He also enjoyed coaching Sherman Park Little League for his grandsons and loved being a golf ranger at the Canyon Club in Armonk.
After retiring, the family spent many enjoyable years vacationing in the Adirondacks and Berkshires. This inspired Syl to open and operate Taconic Valley Real Estate, where he enjoyed meeting people, sharing his excitement for the outdoors and flipping homes.
Syl was an avid sportsman who loved fishing, boating, camping, hunting, and golfing with his family and friends.
