Dr Witt was awarded the Langer Biomechanics Award of Excellence granting him full Tuition Scholarship for Study of Podiatry at the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, 1992-1997 Although not granted extended time to complete his degree in podiatry due to his own devastating MS diagnosis and hospitalizations, Dr Witt dedicated his remaining life to advancing research, patient care and advocacy in MS. Dr Witt completed his PhD in Community Public Health and Devised and implemented regulations to accommodate disabled students in alignment with academic standards.
Dr Witt competed an on-line MD degree from the Blue Marble University Medical School in a 2 year versus 3 year period of time after his slow recovery from long COVID which left him paralyzed from waist down with his MS disease. The Blue Marble Medical degree emphasized cutting edge biomedicine, including stem cell biology and autologous and mixed stem cell regenerative medicine. A focus on advancing multiple sclerosis therapeutics was chosen throughout much of the 21 st century biomedical curriculum. DR WITT WAS A BIOLOGY TEACHING FELLOW from 2004 to 2006 at St. John’s University, Jamaica, NY; Taught biochemistry at Queens Community College and New York University SERVED AS ADJUNCT GENERAL AND ORAGIC CHEMISTRY LECTURER – (2003 to 2004) at Lehman College, Bronx, NY. Multiple Sclerosis- Doctoral Thesis entitled “Experiences of Multiple Sclerosis Patients with
Continuity of Care: A Phenomenological Study” Dr. William Witt
THESIS ABSTRACT:
Background: Continuity of care is a crucial characteristic of high-quality multiple sclerosis (MS) care. Nevertheless, experiences of MS patients with continuing care are currently understudied, particularly through in-depth methods, such as qualitative approaches. This is despite the significance of continuity of care in improving patient satisfaction and the quality of life of patients with chronic diseases. Aim: To examine the experiences and perceptions of MS patients with continuity of care through a critical exploration of their lives following hospitalization for an exacerbation. Design of the study: Qualitative using phenomenological approach. Participants: Eight participants living with MS. All participants were from New York. Method: Individual face to face semi-structured interviews. Results: Participants had experiences with the three types of continuity of care (relational, informational, and managerial). The findings of this research indicated that trusted relationships with a small number of healthcare providers are preferred for tailored and easy access to care. Relational continuity was valued although was in most cases deficient. Informational continuity was essential, although also deficient as health care providers failed to provide the participants with adequate information regarding their condition. Regarding managerial continuity, the participants felt that care delivered to them was not well connected, and they had to assume the responsibility of coordinating their own care. Conclusion: Participants had both positive and negative experiences with the various elements of continuity of care. The implication is that the experiences of MS patients with continuity of care following hospitalization can be used to enhance the quality of care and patient satisfaction
